Hair loss can be a scary. Some loss is normal, while other is due to damage to the hair with chemicals or heat. There are many women that are suffering from thinning hair. This loss is a condition that can result from a number of contributing factors like; hormonal imbalance, medications, medical conditions, scalp infections, poor nutrition, stress, excessive tension in hairstyles(example braids, pony tails) or heredity. Under normal circumstances, we all lose some body hair on a daily basis. Normal everyday loss of hair is the natural result of the (3) phases of the hair growth cycle.

The (3) phases are

*Anagen "growth" phase *Catagen "transitional" phase *Telogen "resting" phase Telogen phase is the final phase in the hair cycle that lasts until fully grown hair is shed. At this point the hair will either shed on it's own or will be forced out by the new incoming hair. This phase can last approximately three to six months, but only about 10 percent of the scalp hair is in the telogen phase at one time. Some would argue that we lose 100-150 hairs per day, but recent measurements show that the average rate of hair loss is more like 35-40 scalp hairs per day. On an average, your entire growth cycle repeats itself once every four to five years. The follicles of the eyebrow hairs remain active for 6-10 years before becoming in active for a couple of months.

Hair Breakage
Hair breakage can be caused by excessive heat, over-processing and dryness. Excessive heating occurs when you do a lot of blow drying or curling to the hair. Over-processing is done when chemicals like relaxers or color are left on the hair too long, over-lapse of processing, or use of unnecessary chemical. If you do any of these things, your hair will feel dry, brittle, and start breaking in the weakest areas. Almost everything we do to our hair will dry it out, so we have to make sure that we are conditioning the hair on a regular basis.

Hair Thinning
Hair thinning can be brought on by a number of factors that upset the normal balance of the hair and scalp. Some examples are surgery, high fever, and severe emotional trauma. Protein deficient diets and breast feeding leads to hair thinning because new hair growth stops when protein needed for keratin synthesis is not available or being used in milk production. In almost all cases, hair will grow back, if the cause of thinning is removed or corrected. In the rare condition called alopecia areata the follicles are attacked by the immune system and the hair falls out in patches. If hair loss occurs due to severe burns, excessive radiation, or other factors that eliminate the follicles, hair loss is permanent.
